Extinguishing Media: Flammable in powdered form. Do not use water or halogenated extinguishers. Use dry chemical extinguishing agents, dry sand or ground dry dolomite.
Special Firefighting Procedures: No special firefighting procedures needed. Use normal procedures which include wearing NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus, flame and chemical resistant clothing; hats, boots and gloves.
Unusual Fire & Explosion Hazards: Product will burn under fire conditions. May react with water liberating flammable, explosive hydrogen gas. Like all organic and most dry chemicals, as a powder or dust, this product (when mixed with air in critical proportions and in the presence of an ignition source) may present an explosion hazard.
V. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Effects of Exposure:
To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of samarium have not been thoroughly investigated and recorded.
Samarium is considered a rare earth metal. These metals are moderately to highly toxic. The symptoms of toxicity of the rare earth elements include writhing, ataxia, labored respiration, walking on the toes with arched back, and sedation. The rare earth elements exhibit low toxicity by ingestion exposure. May lead to production of skin and lung granulomas.
Acute:
Inhalation: May cause irritation to the upper respiratory system.
Ingestion: Considered to have low toxicity by ingestions.
Skin: May cause irritation.
Eye: May cause irritation.
Chronic Effects:
Inhalation: May cause writhing, ataxia, labored respiration, walking on the toes with arched back, sedation, pulmonary edema, and lung granuloma.
Ingestion: May act as a blood anticoagulant.
Skin: No chronic health effects recorded.
Eye: No chronic health effects recorded.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing respiratory disorders.
Carcinogenicity: NTP: No IARC: No OSHA: No EPA: No
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention. Do not induce vomiting or give anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash with plenty of soap and water. Seek medical attention.
EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.
VI. REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Stable
Conditions to be Avoided: Incompatibles, sparks, open flames.
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Water, halogens, oxidizers, 1, 1, 2-trichlorotrifluorethane and strong acids.
Hazardous Decomposition Products: Sm2O3, H2 and other toxic fumes.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
VII. SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
Steps to Be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate protective gear for the situation. Sweep up and place in an appropriate closed container. Vacuuming should be prohibited. Use non-sparking tools. Clean up residual material by washing area with water.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose of in accordance with Local, State and Federal regulations.
VIII. SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection: NIOSH approved dust, mist, and fume respirator.
Ventilation: Glove bag or box with a dry inert atmosphere.
Protective Gloves: Rubber gloves
Eye/Face Protection: ANSI approved safety glasses.
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Lab coat and apron, flame and chemical resistant coveralls.
IX. SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in tightly closed containers. Store in an area that is dry. Avoid breathing dusts or vapors. Avoid direct or prolonged contact with skin and eyes. Use non-sparking tools and grounded/bonded equipment and containers when transferring. Store under inert gas.
Work Practices: Do not store, use, and/or consume foods, beverages, tobacco products, or cosmetics in areas where this material is stored. Wash hands and face carefully before eating, drinking, using tobacco, applying cosmetics, or using the toilet. Wash exposed skin promptly to remove accidentally splashes of contact with this material. Maintain a sink, safety shower and eyewash fountain in the work area. Have oxygen readily available.
Other: May react violently with halogens. Releases hydrogen gas in contact with water. Fire hazard in the form of dust, when exposed to flame or by chemical reaction with oxidizers. Samarium metal is air and moisture sensitive, handle and store under argon or other inert gas.
RCRA Code: D001
TSCA Registered: Yes
Warning Statements: Flammable Solid When a Powder or Thin Foil. All forms will react with dilute acids emitting flammable/explosive hydrogen gas. Flammable, irritates skin and eyes.
