Cerium (Ce)

MATERIAL OVERVIEW

Cerium was discovered in 1803 by Klaproth and by Berzelius and Hisinger and was named after the asteroid Ceres.  The actual metal was not prepared until 1875 by Hillebrand and Norton.  Cerium is the most abundant of the rare earth metals.  Cerium is steel gray in color.   Cerium is attacked by dilute and concentrated mineral acids and by alkalies.  Cerium is the second most reactive rare-earth metal, europium being the most reactive. It readily oxidizes in moist air at room temperature. Small particles will ignite easily.  It has four allotropic forms. Cerium forms alloys with other lanthanides, it also forms a nonmetal with hydrogen, as well as carbides and intermetallic compounds. Cerium decomposes in water.  It is generally considered nontoxic.

While most references describe cerium as malleable we have found it difficult to work.  It work hardens quickly and is prone to cracking.  It oxidizes rapidly in air and turnings can ignite easily.  We can supply cerium in the form of machined rods, sheet, foil.

In additional our many cast forms of Cerium, we also specializes in producing high purity Cerium powder with a particle size of -40 mesh.  The powder is produced by mechanical grinding and sized using fisher sieves.  The Cerium powder is packaged either in ampoules under dry argon or sealed in air tight cans under dry argon.  We package the powder to order, so no order is too small.
